Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge - Sep 27-28, 2020

Since 1993 Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge has been a racer’s favorite regatta.

Who could ever forget the excitement and adrenaline pump while charging out of Back Creek with 100 plus other race boats during Screwpile’s 0900 harbor starts in years past.  Well, our 2020 Screwpile Planning Committee has been working to recapture that excitement with some significant changes to the Screwpile format for 2020.  First, we have teamed up with Annapolis Yacht Club to hold Screwpile on the same weekend as the AYC Fall Race to Solomons in late September.  AYC’s race to Solomons on September 26th will serve as a feeder race for Screwpile which will be run on Sunday/Monday, September 27th/28th.  Cooler temps and better wind expected!

Although we’ve had to alter plans somewhat, we are not going to let the Covid-19 Pandemic interfere with the primary attraction of Screwpile… racing sailboats.

Chesapeake racers will be happy to know that despite Covid-19, Screwpile is a GO.  The 28th running of one of Bay sailors’ favorite regattas will happen as scheduled.  With a reduced registration fee due to Covid-19 driven modifications, Screwpile will be without the customary tent parties and award ceremonies, and protest hearings will be held on-line.  Trophies and Mt Gay red hats will be mailed after the regatta.  Register on-line at https://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=11776.  NOR Amendment #1, reflecting Covid-19 modifications, to be posted soon.

A huge Thank You to all of the hardworking volunteers who give up their time and make the regatta really happen!

Southern Maryland Sailing Association is the Organizing Authority for the 2020 Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge.
